Community Guidelines - General

Post by iih » Fri Feb 17, 2017 3:37 pm

We want the forum to be a nice place, a relaxed place - a place where members can ask for information and seek support in a friendly, supportive atmosphere. With this in mind, here are a few guidelines for a happy and friendly community...

General behaviour

All members of this community, including Administrators and Moderators must be treated with respect. Flaming, arguing with other members and unpleasantness will not be tolerated. If you have a complaint about a member, please contact either Celestia or Michelle privately - do not post the message on the boards.

Please take the time to read the full forum rules which contains all of the rules of the community - this post is just a summary of the sort of behaviour we expect from our members.

Remember, nobody here is a doctor, so check with your doctors before taking any action regarding starting or stopping any medical treatment or therapy. Members here may offer their own experiences and things that have worked for them, but you should seek qualified medical advice before doing anything.

Please do not slander or defame the medical community. We've all come across doctors/information that is out-of-date or that we've had bad experiences with, but doctors are qualified professionals, and they do their best to do what's right for us. To make any kind of progress in finding answers about this condition we need to work with the medical profession, and not against them. Blaming doctors for not having all the answers is not fair, and is not something that will be tolerated in the community. Equally blaming doctors for not knowing all there is to know about IIH isn't fair either - IIH is a rare condition and many doctors may not have come across it before in their professional life. While we have rights as patients, we also have responsibilities too, and one of those is not to undermine the very people who are trying to help us, and take responsibility for our own health and welfare.

Posts containing slanderous or otherwise disruptive messages will be removed.

Posting guidelines

Not sure which board to post a message on? Read the stickied description of the purpose of the board at the top of each board. Posts that are posted in the wrong board will be moved by our moderators to the right board. This is nothing personal - it just means that the moderator feels that it is more suited to another board and that other members will be able to find it easier there.

Please do not write your whole post in CAPS. It is considered to be SHOUTING and is also quite hard to read. Please avoid using 'text talk' as some users may find it difficult to understand. Checking your spelling and punctuation before you post your message can help other members to read your messages - a huge "wall" of text without capitalisation, punctuation or paragraph can make long message difficult to read, especially for members using a screen reader.

Spell checker

The forum software has a built-in spell checker (the button next to "Preview" at the bottom of the posting form) - please make use of it. Posts with many spelling errors can be difficult to read, and particularly so for users of screen readers. The spell checker will highlight any mis-spelled words and offer alternatives.

Please be considerate towards other members and spell check if you're not sure.

Linking to other sites

Please post any links you find relating to IIH on the on the "Links to IIH resources and other organisations" board, not in the general discussion boards. This makes them much easier for other members to find instead of having to search all the boards. When you add a new link to any of the "Links..." board, simply post a message on the general boards, stating that you have added a new link.

Do not spam us. Spam is solicitation or advertising which is not coinnected with the purpose of this community: to provide information and support for people with Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension. In your profile is the option of adding a link to a website, and this information can also be placed in your signature. Personal sites are welcome, as long as the content is appropriate. E-commerce, and other money making sites are not allowed without the permission of the Administrators. Sites must be in English.

The memberlist is regularly checked, and links to sites that are not appropriate will be removed. If it seems as though someone has joined simply to promote a site, they will find their account deleted. If this has happened by mistake, please contact one of the Administrators.

If you quote information in a post, please give the source and a link when possible.

Copyrighted Material

All members agree not to post any material protected by copyright, trademark or other proprietary right without the express permission of the owner(s). This includes but is not limited to magazine, book and newspaper scans, television broadcasts and copyrighted photos and pictures. Using any images, text, or posts from this site elsewhere is also forbidden without the consent of the copyright holder.

Please take care with the language that you use as this forum should be suitable for all ages - we have young visitors to the site and some younger members. Don't use language you wouldn't want your own kids to see and use!

Offensive language is unacceptable. Just editing letters with an asterisk or other symbols isn't allowed either, nor is making attempts to get around the forum's word censor. Profanity in posts will be edited out. Repeat offenders or those who use excessive profanity may lose posting privileges or risk a ban from the forum.

Don't post anything to another member that you wouldn't say to that person if he/she were standing in front of you. Basically, if you can't say anything nice, or constructive, then move on and don't reply to the post.

Any abuses of the private messaging system will result in removal of the offending user and possible ban.

Signatures / Blinkies / Smileys

Please could all members be considerate in their use of signatures, especially any graphics used. Most importantly, please keep them small. The forum can get quite busy, and lots of large signatures would mean lots of scrolling to get through the pages. Also, some members need to use special magnifying software, so a large graphic becomes huge.

Please be careful with the use of animated graphics, smileys and blinkies, remembering that many members here have eyesight problems, which these may aggravate.

Any and all posts that violate the forum rules and other guidelines laid down by the Administrators and Moderators will be deleted without notice. Any post deemed inappropriate by our moderators may be deleted at our discretion. If you see a post disappear, just know there was a good reason. If a post of yours gets removed from the board, do not question it publicly on the board! If you have questions about it, or believe it to be an error, PM the board moderators privately.

Thank you.
